Maunalua, meaning “two mountains,” likely refers to two prominent peaks:  Koko Head and Koko Crater.  Located in urban Southeast O`ahu, this region stretches from Kawaihoa and Kūpikipiki`ō (Portlock Point to Black Point) and to the summit of the Ko`olau Mountains – covering roughly 22 square miles of land, 7 miles of shoreline, and 6.5 square miles of ocean waters.

The landscape of the Maunalua region features U-shaped valleys and ridges that include the residential areas of Kahala, Wai`alae Nui, Wai`alae Iki, `Āina Haina, Hawai`iloa Ridge, Niu Valley, Kuli`ou`ou, and Hawai`i Kai (Mariners Ridge Haha`ione Valley, Kamilonui Valley, Kamiloiki Valley, and Portlock).  More than 60,000 people call this place home.
